ABC/Nissan

TV on the Internet

Project: full episode broadband player
Services: creative, user experience, strategy

ABC wanted to put programming on the web while including ads and maintaining distribution control. The goal; grow the ABC brand draw users and satisfy advertisers.

We designed a cinematically sophisticated video player that does justice to the quality of ABC programming. We also designed and experience in which watching ads becomes a pleasing part of the interactive experience.

. . .

From the beginning, Jackie struck me as someone with seemingly limitless drive and intelligence and she certainly didn’t disappoint. Over the next couple of years, I watched Jackie tackle increasingly complex interactive projects with enthusiasm and a rare flexibility which would always lead to a successful outcome. Her sense of humor, organization, and creativity motivated her teams to excel at whatever it was they were trying to accomplish. At Schematic, Jackie and I worked on several projects for Disney-ABC Television Group. These projects always had tight deadlines and a large amount of requirements. Successful execution depended on coordinating designers, developers, account managers, client team members, and others and providing all parties with clear and frequent architecture deliverables, status reports, and other project management tools.

At the time, I had several project managers working in my program and a lot required close supervision but I was always confident that Jackie could handle whatever the client or I threw at her without having to look over her shoulder. Unlike some interactive companies, Schematic was never an organization where project managers were solely employed to make sure the trains ran on time. Jackie embodied the ideal Schematic project manager by excelling at both project management and creative skills.

She was often pulled into brainstorm meetings for other projects and at one time almost exclusively ran the company’s advertising business as a result of her ability to come up with humorous and catchy advertising campaigns. While a lot of Schematic projects relied on copywriters to write copy, Jackie often wrote her own witty copy.

Outside of work she was equally creative. Several coworkers and I saw her perform a hilarious one woman show that was so good we almost couldn’t believe she did it herself. It’s rare to have a coworker so full of energy, creativity, and loyalty as Jackie and it’s been an honor having her as a colleague.

The AdPods for the “Next Generation Nissan Sentra”, or as I prefer to say at parties, the FIRST enhanced interstitial rich media commercial hybrid, were developed for the ABC Full-Episode Player which offered superior technology for interactive video viewing. Our team at Schematic brought together excellent design, a sense of humor, best practices for ad transparency and customization features to ensure a unique and positive user experience. Viewers were presented with a story and several chances to find out more about the Nissan Sentra in a very entertaining way. As a result, consumers chose to be exposed to product information for longer periods of time than they would for TV commercials and the retention rate was much higher than the industry standard for TV ads (87% compared to 22%). The AdPod model is recognized throughout the interactive world as revolutionizing the user online experience for ad campaigns and redefining retention success. Shorter commercial breaks and fewer of them.

Comcast Networks

Project: ComcastNetworks.com
Services: IA, tech, development, maintenance.

When our project began, the Comcast Networks were E!, Style, Golf Channel, Versus, Sprout, G4, AZN and, added later, on-demand offerings FearNet, ExerciseTV and Select On Demand.

After it merged with AT&T Broadband but before it acquired NBCUniversal, Comcast was the US’s largest cable provider, but owned less than 1% of the content it was “providing.” Sure, it had E!, Golf Channel, a few dozen regional/sports networks and had even successfully expanded some of its brands, but these endeavors were each independent operations that, even if counted together, failed to take a visible slice of TV market share.

Comcast needed a TV unit. They wanted ABC/ESPN’s but when their bid to acquire Disney in 2004 was rejected, they relented and reluctantly started Comcast Networks; wrangling various TV properties and regional networks under one roof.

The headline of a Business Insider article from 2016, puts it perfectly:

“Microsoft’s very first Surface was this largely forgotten coffee table sized-tablet that Bill Gates loved”

The original Surface concept, ahead of its time, was for a supersized, infrared-powered touch screen for public places that multiple people could use at once. The Surface 1.0’s single best feature was the ability for apps to recognize objects placed on the screen — in one demo, Microsoft showed off using an ordinary paintbrush to “paint.”

Project: StarbrightWorld
Services: user experience, design

Starbright World is the first-ever online social network for teens with chronic and life-threatening medical conditions. Operated by Starlight Children’s Foundation, the free service allows members to connect globally with others experiencing similar medical journeys — playing games, sharing photos, writing blogs, and chatting — all in a safe, troll-free, moderated environment.

Being a teen is universally overwhelming without the added stress, isolation and loneliness that comes from battling serious illness. Not all aspects of healing are solely medical; those undergoing frequent hospitalizations and procedures – not to mention those with contagious conditions – can feel left out or alienated from “normal” teen social activities and school events, but via Starbright World, they can reach out to a friend or make new ones, express themselves, lend an ear, develop communication skills, talk about their fears, find encouragement, process their feelings, and connect with other teens who are going through similar experiences.

Redesigning Oprah.com
imac background

Like Ms. Winfrey’s business and entertainment endeavors, her web site, Oprah.com, at 65,000+ pages, is truly epic in scope.

In the average month, more than six million users make over 70 million impressions across the site, and the Oprah.com team receives around 90,000 emails.

. . .

I first met Jackie in the spring of 2006 when she was a project manager at Schematic Inc.. For almost a year, we worked together to redesign the 65,000+ page website and subsequent online programs/applications. Jackie, with the help of her co-producer, ran the multi-million dollar project carefully and passionately, and has proved to be exceptional in several respects. Jackie is a remarkably creative thinker. She not only managed the project, she was also a part of the creative process. Though this participation was not something of which she was required, her insight was invaluable.

She played a vital role in the strategic application design of the Oprah.com project, stretching the scope of the project to much more than a typical marketing website and finding new ways to engage our target user. Jackie is very intelligent and quick-witted. She proved to be a very quick study, learning everything about our brand, goals, demographics and scope in record time.

In addition to becoming a brand expert of her group, Jackie was always cheerful during this intense period. She was a joy to have in the think tank. She is a considerate team player. She is also good at gauging other people’s level of knowledge and attitudes.
